IRWIN RACING RUNS B-TRIPLE CONFIGURATION ACROSS THE NULLARBOR

A B-Double can carry a substantial amount of gear, but sometimes you need something bigger.

If you noticed that the IRWIN Racing transporter looks a little longer than usual in the photo above, you’d be right.

Ahead of the Perth SuperNight next weekend, IRWIN Racing’s Kenworth T610 prime mover is pulling three, instead of two trailers across the Nullarbor.

The team hasn’t suddenly decided to carry double the spares they usually do or run two Supercars in Perth. The second trailer instead carries equipment for the IRWIN Ultimate Tradesman Challenge, a unique initiative that follows the Supercars roadshow this year.

The configuration is called a B-Triple and it’s already rumbling west having extended beyond the regular B-Double at the Kitco depot on the north side of Adelaide.

IRWIN Racing’s truck driver, Colin Schwartz, has enjoyed a diverse truck driving career well before joining the motorsport world. However, this is breaking new ground.

“This is the first time out on the open road that I have captained a B-Triple. The biggest factors have been allowing enough room for turning as you now cut a lot more road when turning. It’s quite stable on the road and tows extremely well.

It has very much the same characteristics as the B-Double. It’s actually not too much heavier. We would be lucky to be grossing 70 tonne.”

Colin describes what gear is being carried where.

“The lead A-Trailer is our normal race trailer consisting of all wheels, tyres and telemetry equipment. The second A-Trailer contains the IRWIN Ultimate Tradesman Challenge activation equipment which includes a brand-new Holden Colorado Sportscat. Last but not least, the B-Trailer contains the most important part being the ZB Holden Commodore race car.”

Despite the extra weight, the team’s Kenworth prime mover is more than up to the task.

"The Kenworth T610 is seriously amazing, handling it is an understatement. You can hardly tell there is another trailer and it is super stable going down the road. It makes you feel very confident. And to top it off, Perth would have to be one of my favourite trips of the year!”

With the trip west well underway, you can follow Colin’s travels in the extened IRWIN Racing transporter on Facebook and Instagram. Make sure you watch our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts for all the trucking action leading up to the duel under lights next weekend.
