One week is a long time in Formula 1, so you can imagine how much has changed since the photographer aimed their lens at Scuderia Ferrari’s race transporter at Mugello Circuit back in 1977.

It was a championship-winning year for the most famous team in Formula 1, with Nikki Lauda claiming his second championship title for Ferrari in the thunderous 312T2B. However, the relationship between the Austrian and the front-running Italian squad was fracturing, and Gilles Villeneuve assumed driving duties for the final two rounds of the season.

Holding down the other Ferrari seat was Carlos Reutemann, and the Argentinian was testing at the Mugello Circuit that day. Reutemann claimed one victory that year at the Brazilian Grand Prix, and his fourth place in the drivers’ standings helped Scuderia Ferrari claim the constructors’ title too.

The transporter you see in this photo was in use for many years, with involvement in at least four constructors’ titles. The truck up front is a Fiat 170, which was produced by the newly-formed IVECO business but sold with Fiat badging. And this truck model was in use by Ferrari until the early 80s before they upgraded to newer IVECO-badged trucks including the famous Turbostar tractor unit.

This race trailer remained with the Italian squad throughout this period too, with what appears to be the same trailer design appearing in the F1 paddock until 1981.

And if you’re into diecast models, you can have this setup on the shelf at home. We never say no to an eBay session, and this 1/43 scale model replicating its 1979 configuration (including a wind deflector) popped up in Buffalo, New York of all places. It’s not cheap, but they’re hard to find!
