The stakes were high at Fuji International Speedway last Sunday afternoon, with the 2021 SUPER GT title on the line.

A Honda win in the GT500 class looked likely as the trucks rolled in for the eighth and final round of the season. However, Toyota stole the honours in dramatic circumstances, with the #36 TOM’S Toyota Supra of Yuhi Sekiguchi and Sho Tsuboi claiming the race win and with it, a shock title.

Their race win created a buffer of four points over the #8 ARTA Honda NSX of Tomoki Nojiri and Nirei Fukuzumi, who could only manage sixth place at the chequered flag. Meanwhile, the championship favourite heading into the weekend, Naoki Yamamoto, tangled with a lapped car and failed to finish the race. He placed third in the standings.

In the GT300 class, Takuto Iguchi and Hideki Yamauchi crossed the line in third place on Sunday afternoon, which was enough to claim Subaru its first SUPER GT title.

The team transporters have now left Fuji International Speedway to return the worn out machinery to their workshops over winter.

The teams now begin a well-deserved break. The 2022 Autobacs SUPER GT Series gets underway on April 17 at Okayama International Circuit.
