Before COVID took hold across the east coast of Australia, the 44th annual Historic Winton race meeting took place at Winton Motor Raceway. With hundreds of historic race cars and bikes competing across 14 different categories, there were plenty of transporters in the various race paddocks spread around the Benalla circuit.

For the full vintage motorsport vibe, it was hard to go past the Maysdale Racing rig. From the moment we saw it tucked behind the northern paddock in fading light, we knew it was going to take up what little camera battery we had left at the end of the day.

While we haven’t been able to identify the model, the transporter has a Leyland badge up front. And it’s typical of the charming haulers of the early-to-mid 20th Century, which saw a variety of configurations to take race equipment to the track. No B-Doubles back then!

The race car it’s carrying is called the ‘Maysdale’, which isn’t actually as old as it looks. The car debuted at Historic Winton in 2006, and was built by the Grenness family closely following the regulations of the 1930s.

Under the Mercedes-Benz W125-inspired body is a 268-cubic inch side valve Ford V8 with three gears to choose from, using pre-1940 parts. It was raced by Peter Grenness in one of two regularity categories.

Hats off to Team Maysdale for recreating an amazing era in global motorsport.
